PAST EXHIBITION:
A MILLER'S TALE
A Miller’s Tale offers a unique insight into the plight of Germans living in London during the First World War and covers topics including the Queens Westminster Rifles, the Christmas Truce, the Battle of Somme and the Unknown Warrior.
Britain was once home to 100,000 Germans, but with the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, that was soon to change; by the end of the war only 20,000 remained. Those who did stay often changed their names to avoid victimisation.
A Miller's Tale is a Westminster Archives educational project produced by Education Officer, Peter Daniel, who delivered a range of educational activities in primary and secondary schools during 2007.
The exhibition looks at stories linked to the famous football matches played on Christmas Day 1914 and uses archive material linked to Chelsea FC to examine the role sport played in recruitment in the early years of World War One.
The exhibition showcases work by children and young peoples and also artist, Jonathan Boast, who delivered arts activities for the project.
